Background

The Arthur River is located within the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area. It is well known for large resident and sea run brown trout captures. Typical of most west coast rivers, it is tannin stained and surrounded by thick vegetation. Due to their protected status any estuary perch caught must be released immediately. Penalties apply for taking protected fish.

Getting There

Arthur River is on the C214, 16 km south of Marrawah.

Angling Notes

Fly and lure fishing for sea run and resident brown trout is popular from September to December. Fishing from the shore is limited to the mouth of the river near the main road bridge. Fishing from a boat provides greater access.
Due to their protected status, any estuary perch (Percalates colonorum) caught must be released immediately. Penalties apply for taking protected fish.

Protect Waters

Recreational anglers have a responsibility to look after fisheries resources for the benefit of the environment and future generations.
Do not bring live or dead fish, fish products, animals or aquatic plants into Tasmania.
Do not bring any used fishing gear or any other freshwater recreational equipment that may be damp, wet or contain water into Tasmania. Check, clean and dry your fishing equipment before entering Tasmania.
Do not transfer any freshwater fish, frogs, tadpoles, invertebrates or plants between inland waters.
Check your boat, trailer, waders and fishing gear for weed and other pests that should not be transferred before moving between waters.
Do not use willow (which is a plant pest) as a rod support as it has the ability to propagate from a strike.

Native Fish Management

The estuary perch (Percalates colonorum) is only found in the Arthur River, in Tasmania. Due to their limited range and low population numbers, they are listed as a protected fish under the Inland Fisheries Act 1995. It is an offence to be in possession of, or take estuary perch.
Ongoing monitoring of the estuary perch population is currently being undertaken. If a tagged estuary perch is inadvertently caught, please take note of the tag number, release without delay, and report it to 1300 INFISH or email infish@ifs.tas.gov.au.
The river blackfish (Gadopsis marmoratus) are present in the river. There is a minimum size limit of 220 mm and bag limit of 12 fish per day for this species.
The State and Commonwealth protected giant freshwater lobster (Astacopsis gouldi) is present within this river. This slow growing species can reach weights in excess of 5 kg but are commonly much smaller. They are wholly protected and if observed are not to be disturbed.
The spotted galaxias (Galaxias truttaceus) is also present in the river.

Pest Fish Management

Anglers can help reduce the spread of pests in Tasmanian waterways by not transferring fish between waters. Offences may incur significant penalties.
